We continue to pioneer the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) as an alternative to expedite the healing of injuries. In this case, the patient sustained a fracture of the fibula and we decided to inject the fracture with PRP Under fluoroscopic guidance to continue our efforts to heal the injury, maximize improvement and minimize any long-term complications.
Common injuries of the feet such as ankle sprains, Achilles tendonitis, and plantar fasciitis, as well as acute and chronic tendon and joint diseases such as arthritis, can all be treated with PRP injections. For many, this therapy has lead to greatly reduced pain and increased function of the foot. Combining exercise or physical therapy with the PRP injections will help increase the success of the treatment.
Here’s Dr. Toe Jam demonstrating how it’s done!

Chronic venous leg ulcers come with cost and morbidity for patients. A leg ulcer is a long-lasting (chronic) sore that takes more than four to six weeks to heal. They usually develop on the inside of the leg, just above the ankle. The symptoms of a venous leg ulcer include pain, itching and swelling in the affected leg. For patients with chronic venous leg ulcers, autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is safe and effective, with highly significant improvement in ulcer size compared to conventional treatment.

Plantar fasciitis is inflammation of the ligament (plantar fascia) that stretches from your heel to your middle foot bones. It is thought to be caused by repeated tiny injuries from overuse.
Symptoms:

When we suffer an injury, our bodies have natural mechanisms which help us heal. Of course, if all we needed to quickly and effectively heal were our unaided bodies, we wouldn’t have much need for doctors, medicine, surgery, or other medical treatment. But that’s not the case.
One treatment which has proven to be an effective healing therapy for a wide range of injuries and conditions involves taking one of those natural mechanisms and enhancing it to provide quicker, more effective healing. Called Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP), this treatment has been around for many years and is a safe and painless way to help our bodies recover after injury or trauma.
What is Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy?
After an injury to soft tissue, the first response the body gives is to deliver platelet cells to the injured soft tissues. Platelets are the clotting cells of our blood, but they are also enriched with growth and healing factors that will initiate repair and provide assistance to stem cells in damaged muscle, tendon, and ligaments.
PRP therapy takes that natural process and essentially turbocharges it. A sample of blood is taken from the patient and then placed in a centrifuge where the platelets are separated from other elements of the blood. That platelet-rich plasma is then injected into the injured tissue, stimulating the work that the body is already doing.
Benefits of Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections
PRP therapy procedure is non-surgical and typically takes only a few hours including preparation, injection and recovery. No anesthesia is used nor is there any significant recovery time. PRP offers many benefits which can make it a valuable part of recovery from sport injuries or other conditions, including:
- Lumbar spine disc pain
- Rotator cuff injuries, including partial-thickness
- Shoulder pain and instability
- Tennis and golfer’s elbow
- Hamstring and hip strains
- Knee sprains and instability
- Patellofemoral syndrome and patellar tendonitis
- Ankle sprains
- Achilles tendonitis & plantar fasciitis
- Knee, hip, and other joint osteoarthritis
- Knee arthritis
- Hip joint arthritis
- Shoulder arthritis
- Ankle arthritis
Whether on its own or in conjunction with surgery and other treatments, PRP offers patients the opportunity to reduce pain and speed up the recovery process after an injury. You should discuss with your physician whether PRP is right for you.
