Recent advancements in regenerative medicine have revolutionized the way we treat many injuries and conditions, including those affecting the foot and ankle.

These treatments utilize and enhance the body’s natural healing functions to address pain and speed the recovery process.

Perhaps the most significant advantage of these therapies is that they are minimally-invasive and can spare patients the challenges, inconvenience, and potential complications involved in surgery.

At JAWSpodiatry, we practice multiple forms of regenerative injection therapy, all of which are safe, tested, and effective. These include stem cells and platelet-rich plasma injections.

But we also take advantage of the healing and curative properties contained in the stem cells of a patient’s own bone marrow to safely and naturally repair damage and relieve pain.

Regenerative procedures, including bone marrow aspirate concentrate injections, are performed in just a day, minimizing healing time considerably.

What is Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate?

Doctors have used bone marrow therapy safely and effectively used for years to treat a variety of ailments.

This treatment works because of the natural power and potential of the stem cells found in our bones.

Bone Marrow Aspirate Stem Cell Concentrate (BMAC) is an element of your marrow that contains powerful growth factors and anti-inflammatory properties which help repair and restore damaged tissue throughout the body.

The American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society has concluded that stem cells taken from bone marrow “can be used to help with bone healing, cartilage repair, and new blood vessel growth.

Using stem cells may treat delayed union or nonunion of bone fractures, cartilage defects, osteonecrosis, chronic tendon problems or chronic wounds.”

What is Involved in a BMAC Therapy Procedure?

What makes BMAC therapy different from some other regenerative treatments is that we use the patient’s own stem cells instead of those from a third-party donor.

During the procedure, we typically extract stem cells from the heel bone using a specially designed needle that draws out the cells in a syringe, along with other elements found in the marrow.

We then spin the product in a centrifuge to filter and separate the stem cells from the other elements.

After that, we injected the cells into the damaged tissue where they enhance the healing your body is already working on.

In many ways, bone marrow therapy is very similar to platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP) injections, another form of regenerative medicine we often use.

In fact, we sometimes use bone marrow stem cells and PRP injections in combination when appropriate to further promote pain relief and tissue repair.
